Rapping My Way to An A: A Cove Shelter in Place Story

by Bianka Kovacs

Hi Cove Community,

I have recently moved to the Cove and I just started enjoying the amazing community activities when the virus changed all of our plans. While I was still finishing up my graduate degree, I still had plenty of time to go outside and socialize but suddenly everything changed.

I studied Games and Playable Media and was working on a battlefield medic simulation game and its final report when the Shelter In Place measures were put into place. My last assignment was to create a 5 minute presentation postmortem of our game which usually explains briefly what the game was, what went wrong and what went right. When I found out that we only have 5 minutes to the presentation I reached out to my professor questioning his sanity as 5 minutes would be not enough to even start explaining my game. Jokingly I told him that I’d have to rap my presentation to fit it all into 5 minutes. He, also jokingly, said that if I do that, he’ll give the entire team an A.

I told my friend how funny it would be then soon realized that I have so much time now that I cannot go anywhere… why not do it?

So I sat down at my computer and started drafting up my song. Once I got the lyrics set, I found a baseline and to the joy to my next door neighbor, I started recording my rap over and over. (Sorry Fred! 😃 ) After about 5 hours and a hundred tries I finally got it!

My presentation was a blast! My professor was shocked and super excited to almost immediately post it to everyone he know making it viral in the game development community. I had a great time doing it and realized that it doesn’t matter that I have never rapped before or my first language is Hungarian, I could do it!

Possibly, just possibly… maybe this shelter in place isn’t so bad after all. 😊

Enjoy!

All the best,

Bianka
