Please join for a presentation and discussion.
In the latest United Nations/World Health Organization report on global maternal deaths only 4 countries reported increases… Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Venezuela, and the USA. The reasons for this increase are multifactorial, access, affordability, maternity deserts, ethnicity, age, and chronic diseases. But we need to act now to stop these women from dying while giving life. Suellen Miller, PhD, Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, will discuss the global picture on maternal deaths, progress in some countries, the latest on the effects of US policies ending or defunding USAID, NIH grants, and the withdrawal from the World Health Organization, and what actions we can take reverse this trend.
Suellen, a new Cove resident, began her clinical work as a nurse-midwife. She got her PhD in 1994 and has been working in global maternal health since the 1980s. She has travelled extensively from the Himalayan peaks of Tibet to the depths of Jordan’s Dead Sea, from tiny island nations (Alinglaplap) to some of the most populous countries, such as Nigeria, India, and Indonesia. She has conducted training and teaching for health care providers, worked with WHO and other organizations to improve maternal and reproductive health, published over 150 scientific articles, and ignited the use of a simple, low-cost, device, the LifeWrap, which saves mother’s lives during childbirth.
