SUPPORT BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES
SMALL BUSINESSES THAT ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY AND CULTURE
Small businesses are the engine of our economy. This month, we celebrate black-owned businesses that have taken their passion for entrepreneurship and expression to the next level. These businesses contribute so much to our community and we want to not only wish them continued success in these difficult times but showcase as many as we can so that you can discover and support them.
A good example of this spirit of community and entrepreneurship is Camisha’s Cakes. The owner, Camisha G, got her start from a Food Network episode on cake making at the age of 13. At the age of 18, she started to get requests from family and friends. Soon she had outgrown her parent’s kitchen. A series of family tragedies sent her on a soul-searching journey through Europe. It was there that that she decided it was “all or nothing” and decided to answer her calling. She opened Camisha’s Cakes in June 2019 and designs and bakes delicious, custom cakes that are truly one of a kind.
Hailing from Dakar, Senegal, Nafy Flatley is a chef and now owner of Terenga, which celebrates the foods and products from her native land. As the pandemic hit, Nafy pivoted to support those hospitality workers that were disproportionately affected by stay safe orders and phased closures. Many of these workers are immigrants, and a meal is not only welcomed, but serves as community. She has also extended her work to include the homeless and elderly care facilities. “In the midst of such a challenging time, it feels good to be able to help those in need,” she says.
We hope you will continue to patronize and explore these wonderful businesses that add such diversity and richness to the fabric of our community.
